In response to public feedback, the project team and designers working on the pedestrian and cycling improvements in Alveston Hill have decided to adjust the proposals for the junction between Down Road and Alveston Hill. This will mean that:
The project team is grateful for the comments from local people, which have helped deliver improvements to the scheme. Revised drawings for the scheme and the full design response document, which details the Council’s feedback on other suggestions made through the consultation are available on this webpage.
In the summer, the Full Business Case will be submitted to the West of England Combined Authority who are funding these improvements. They will then make the final decision about whether the scheme should proceed.
A38 scheme
The project team working on the A38 scheme continue to work with designers and engineers to consider feedback provided through the consultation. Similar documents will be published on this site when this work is complete.
The project teams are grateful to the hundreds of local people who shared their views via the consultations on the proposed pedestrian and cycling improvements for the A38, Alveston Hill and Bradley Stoke Way.
With so many responses, this feedback provides a comprehensive summary of local people’s views. The consultation report summarises the findings of the survey and maps plot comments which relate to specific locations where people have highlighted potential improvements or concerns. Visit this page to review the reports and maps for each project.
The consultation report has been shared with the project team, project sponsors and other decision-makers for consideration. The next step is for the project team and designers to review specific feedback and original designs to evaluate potential opportunities to make improvements and enhancements and address concerns. A separate design response document will summarise the findings of this exercise, which will be published here.
We have submitted a planning application for a new off-road greenway, including a two-way cycle track with segregated footpath, along Alveston Hill.
The greenway will run through fields from the B4061 Alveston Hill/Thornbury Road to Thornbury Leisure Centre, providing a convenient and safe walking, wheeling and cycling route enabling local journeys between Thornbury and Alveston.
Currently those who choose to walk between the two communities must use Public Rights of Way through farmland where animals graze. These footpaths are not surfaced, so are difficult for pedestrians in the winter months. Cyclists making the same journey have no option but to use Thornbury Road and Alveston Hill, which is narrow and steep and has no dedicated cycle lane. The narrow footpath alongside the road is also substandard for pedestrians.
These substandard facilities mean some pupils attending Marlwood Secondary School in Alveston have to rely on cars to get to school. A new high quality, safe route will enable more young people to make the choice to switch to active travel, helping to reduce traffic and congestion along the B4061 between Alveston and Thornbury.
The new greenway would connect with our proposals for improving walking, wheeling and cycling facilities on the B4061 Alveston Hill/Thornbury Road, which we recently consulted on. This consultation is now closed but you can read more about the wider scheme online at www.southglos.gov.uk/a38-bsw-active-travel. The greenway has to be considered through the planning process because it falls outside the existing highway boundary.
The Local Planning Authority has launched a consultation on the planning application for the new greenway. To view the proposals and have your say go to www.southglos.gov.uk/planning-applications and search application number P23/03491/R3F.
Thank you to everyone who has taken part in our travel improvement consultation so far.
We’ve already had feedback from hundreds of local residents and stakeholders on proposals to improve active and sustainable travel.
We also appreciate the time people have taken to join us at our drop-in sessions. It’s been great to meet with people and discuss the issues that are important to them.
Topics raised include:
- the need for segregated cycle ways
- new speed limits
- the new and improved crossings for pedestrians and cyclists
The project has a dedicated Your Questions Answered section where you can find further information on these topics and more.
There is still a month left if you would like to have your say.
The consultation closes on Sunday 17 December.
